We recently went on holidays and before I left, I was reading on the Wordpress website. I must have been half blind, because I made a fatal error which saw all my indexed positions disappear. I am way too busy on so many fronts. How about you? Well, I came back to install several Wordpress plugins. Then I posted an update to what we were doing smashing things.
That’s when I noticed all the posts had an excerpt at the beginning. And on the same page was the same first paragraph repeated right after the picture in the post. At first I thought it was just the one post. But after checking half a dozen random posts, I realized the entire website had duplicate content!
Even worse was the first paragraph of each post was repeated right after each other. To a search engine this is known as one form of keyword stuffing. Even the most notorious black hatters would at least place repetitive keywords in their keyword meta tag. But I was blatantly publishing it out in front for all to see. It was like saying, “Come and get me Google, I dare you!” Are you surprised all my content got kicked down to the bottom of the heap in every index?
I’m not. And this is how we learn. By breaking things first at our expense. This is your hard fast lesson for today. And how to make it all better with the search engines once again.
Above is the basic default result of how your Wordpress Blog would look with a simple image and post article. But what is you wanted to publish say ten stories a day? You would then have ten pictures and posts loading on your Wordpress Blog. This would take sometime for readers of dial-up Internet connections for sure. And if it is a popular blog or even worse, on a shared server with bandwidth restrictions. Well then, your visitors could be waiting sometime for just the first page wouldn’t they? Or would they even wait at all?
Well this is where the excerpt template tag comes in. It allows you to simply post a snippet of your blog post. Your Wordpress Blog then hyperlinks the title of your blog post to the entire post in it’s entirety from the snippet title itself. Which is the same title of your original blog post. But many Wordpress Blog owners use the excerpt template tag to create large feeds of content. All of which link to actual static pages on their Wordpress Blogs.
Well, that’s one way to do it. Other’s just want to publish several posts each day and not bother with fancy pictures. This is ideal for serving up a page quickly to dial up Internet users with thirty to fifty snippets of stories or articles. Theses are just a few of the fantastic uses of using the excerpt template tag. Take a look at the result on our blog by using the excerpt template tag replacing the default content template tag.
This also works automatically for all your Wordpress Blog Categories as well. Can you imagine how many posts can be published and shown quickly within just a few page views with the excerpt template tag? Here’s a picture of how the excerpt template tag works in our Software Category Feed.
So lets now see how we make the actual changes to our index.php file. This is the stuff they don’t show you yet how to do on the Wordpress website yet. Maybe someday they will. In the meantime, let’s get you going today. Go into your Administration Panel and select “Design.” Then select “Theme Editor.”
On the right you will see a file named, “Main Index Template (index.php).” Click on this as it is a hyperlink. It will load in the same page to the left in the text box. This is a php script, which controls the main page of your Wordpress Blog. That is whether you are using your Wordpress Blog as the front page to your website or as a blog sub-webpage. The same file controls both options. Take a look at the picture below. It will make more sense to you.
Now here is where I made the mistake from reading the instructions on the Wordpress Website. Take a look at the next picture. This is what you are not to do. What you need to do is REPLACE the content template tag with the excerpt template tag. Incidentally, had I inserted the excerpt template tag after the content template tag, our Wordpress Blog would have simply disregarded the insertion of the excerpt template tag altogether. But this was not my luck and because of it, I am at least able to pass on to you what I have learned from breaking our Wordpress Blog once more.
So why is MSN not affected? It’s obvious to us, it’s algorithm works on a different set of timing sequences and events than Google or Yahoo. For instance, I tracked some keywords and noticed it took Yahoo a little longer to drop our indexed positions than Google. This has consequences regarding the “trust” factor of Google’s algorithm. But I am confident we will more than make up for it in the next two weeks.
The first step is to either choose the excerpt template tag or the content template tag in the index.php file. Then continue publishing daily and wait about seven to ten days for the Google Love Affair to continue. Then Yahoo wil get jealous and come back as well. Yahoo is such a following (me too) search engine. Which template tag do you think we chose today? Don’t be surprised if it changes, as we are still smashing things here. The highlighting feature is to make commenting easier and more relevant to the reader. You just click and it is automatically inserted into your comment box.
This is the purpose of it anyways. Thanks for your opinion.
